This round of collections really brought back the simplicity of the 1990s, right down to the lovely muted tints. It also re-energized the concept of femininity and the elegance it manifests. The pant/trouser is, itself, the sole champion of this fashion race; more designers this time incorporated it into their message – an oddity for spring-summer, when you really think about it.

Perhaps Paris, versus New York, London and Milan, has a different take on the global economy and the consumer mindset. This may help to explain their more “back to basics” approach. As the fashion world experimented and moved beyond acceptable boundaries in past seasons, this spring-summer 2013 line-up officially trimmed the fat and delivered an impressive assortment of fashion pieces that are not only interesting and original, but also wearable.

Actually this back to basics factor is not only a trend, it is a philosophy reflected by a shift in aesthetics. Not long ago, the Satyricon-style of John Galliano at Christian Dior exemplified the theatrics of the day. Today, the discreet style of Raf Simons is placing its stamp on the Parisian collections, helping to establish this back to basics mood.

If one thing is purely evident in Paris Fashion Week, it is the incestuous relationships among the various lines presented. Designers have often worked for two labels or two lines within a label and their collections reflect this cross-influence, resulting in looks within one collection seemingly ”sampling” for the other. This is much akin to Haute couture in its role as a creative lab that moves onto the ready to wear line. Christian Dior and Chanel did it, so did Miuccia Prada with Miu Miu, as did Elie Saab and everyone else down to Christophe Lemaire.
